Derek
In grade six I found the sport of rodeo, after going to the NFR. Since then I haven’t stopped roping, competing in High School and amateur rodeos. During my Jr. years I entered all the events offered. Grade six year I went to Gallup New Mexico, I competed in the Ribbon Roping and Goat tying. My best year was in 2014, grade 8 year I went to Des Moines Iowa and competed in Team Roping, Ribbon Roping, breakaway, Goat Tying, chute dogging. I placed 2nd in the second round of Breakaway and also fourth in the chute dogging. I won the junior high school all around saddle, along with winning the #10, second in the #10 and second in the #8, winning the #6 saddle at the Smokey River Team Roping Finals. In the six years I’ve been roping I have won seven saddles, 17 buckles and other blankets or boots for the horses. But yet, I am very thankful for who all has gave me pointers and tips along the way, I was very lucky to start with Ken Babcock, he made sure I had the proper swing down pat, before I got to rope live cattle. But it’s not just your roping you have to work on. Horsemanship is what makes you a good roper, if you can’t ride a horse you are not going to progress. I was fortunate to have Christine Painter teach me how to ride. I then hooked up with the Wilson’s, where I started roping live cattle.
They have been helping me ever since, Rod Spiers and Greg Wilson found a solid horse named Max and he was a blessing, teaching me lots. I learned to ride him and then, we made a great team. I would like to travel and rodeo all over the U.S. along with everywhere in Canada. Most importantly, I couldn’t be more grateful for the support my family gives me along with everyone who has helped me with my journey. Including the Wilsons and Rod Spiers for teaching me to rope, ride and watch the cattle. 8 Seconds Western wear are amazing sponsors and support, their crew are very helpful and give great advice on the products I need.
